But does this mean that Microsoft is rewriting history and claiming that they invented collaboration, or is it an admission that Microsoft was at least a decade behind other vendors in this area?

Who cares. Microsoft is doing well in a part of the industry that they didn’t invent / claimed first themselves. That’s not new you know 😉
