Gartner is down to analysing individual devices these days so it seems. They’ve given their take on the new BlackBerry 8800. Reading a bit between the lines they seem to say that innovation is becoming tough for RIM and Microsoft seems to finally show their teeth …
The 8800 series offers the omnidirectional trackball first seen in the Pearl (BlackBerry 8100), GPS and a thinner profile. But RIM’s advantage in keyboards has been mitigated by the compromised design of the 8800.
… The bottom line, however, is that RIM has done the expected and continues to keep up with trends in design. Enterprises should continue to view RIM as a robust vendor with low risk, but by mid-2007, we expect Microsoft and its OEM partners to finally provide some stiff competition. …
