What ? Bill Buchan running … Vista ? and … Office 2007 ?

This made my day, or what’s left of it. Bill : my offer to you is 1 free tech support call should it be needed 🙂

… The great thing about making plans is that you dont have to actually follow them. Following the Lotusphere week, I decided the Blingmaster (My Dell XPS Gen-2 gaming laptop) had to be reinstalled. So what to do ? Redo XP (and spend four hours re-downloading all the patches) or go for Vista ? Well..

Being lazy and curious, I thought I’d give Vista a whirl. So in honour of Bill Gates’ visit to Scotland (presumably to shill Vista to the Government), I’ve installed Vista Business…

  1. Ah – you didnt read far enough down:
“(Even I’m not stupid enough to go for Office 2007!)”..
    🙂
Yeah. Vista. It was faster installing that than rebuilding the machine from scratch using XP (again).
Here’s hoping that a complete machine rebuild isnt required on Vista as if you bought an upgrade license:
    1. Vista requires to see the old code on the disk
    2. During the Vista upgrade it INVALIDATES your old XP serial number.
Was this process designed by someone who *really* wants people to hate microsoft, or was it designed by the lawyers? Are they the same thing ? I mean – thats dumb.
Its not a strong *buy* signal. Its been running for 12 hours now, and it hasnt barfed yet. Which is a new first for a “day-one” MS consumer operating system. Mind you – I’ve not really stressed it yet.
    And the summary ?
“Put it this way: This isnt strong enough for me to consider NOT purchasing a macbook this summer. ”
Am I converted ? Well, I’m running it. But I’ve not removed the XP partition yet.

  2. Bill,
There’s also a VirtualPC which comes standard wuth Vista. That will allow you to install XP and any programs that may not be compatible (yet) with Vista.
And yes, let’s not jump to conclusions yet 😀 😉

  3. Bill,
Sorry to see your conclusion although I think you haven’t given this “test” any serious chance.
I run Vista for almost 9 months now and besides some btea / driver issues have used it throughout this time on my production machine.
I know I can’t compare my work to your, at least I don’t develop and don’t run different OS’, etc. On the other hand I don’t view you as a typical user either ..
Good luck with your MAC or Linux machine(s in the future 😉

  4. Well, I run Vista for over 9 months as well. Office 2007 (from DF4 builds, now RTM), Visual Studio 2005 (sp1) and Lotus Notes 6.5.4 and I am very happy with it. I used Virtual Server 2005 and Virtual PC for my tests and development as well. Fortunatly didn’t have the problems Bill had but I think it’s ready for primetime.
PS I don’t do the low level C++ stuff, maybe thats it 😉
