In this short film, Gerd Leonhard explores his primary speaking topic: the interaction between humans and machines, the role of artificial intelligence, and the future of humanity in a world where machines possess capabilities to hear, see, speak, learn, and ’think’.
Leonhard posits that on one hand, artificial intelligence has the potential to enhance our lives across various sectors such as energy, medicine, and urban planning. However, on the flip side, it poses existential questions about the essence of being human and could radically alter human identity and employment. AI might not only disrupt jobs but could also liberate us from mundane routines. Yet, the looming question remains: if machines achieve true intelligence, what roles will be left for humans?
Leonhard believes the answer lies in what he terms “DIGITAL ETHICS.” This concept revolves around utilizing technology for the collective benefit of humanity—embracing it without losing our essence—and addressing the largely uncharted consequences brought about by rapid technological advancements. With technology poised to gain almost boundless influence within two decades, he argues that the critical questions will shift from the technical ‘if’ or ‘how’ to the ethical ‘why’ and ‘who.’ He raises the necessity of establishing a global digital ethics council on AI to navigate these challenges and ponder how such a body could be implemented.
