22 augustus 2005

Slow on blogging in the coming weeks

18 juli 2005

I will be slow on blogging in the coming weeks as I will go on a business trip and on holiday directly after that. Not sure if and when I will have a chance to blog / if I will be “allowed to’ 😉

Peterdehaas.nl domein doorgelinkt

14 juli 2005

Operation move site : Phase 1 completed

10 juli 2005

OK, this morning I checked and my new DNS setting are ok; meaning my domainname is linked to my new weblog and all.

What do you think, is the blog improved (a bit) ?

The next phase is a more difficult decision: will I keep my Dutch Weblog as a separate one or shall I combine the English and Dutch posts ? I have seen some blogs that do it, but I am not sure. I am quite an active blogger from time to time, meaning that in Dutch and English combined there can be up to 10 posts per day. The issue is Dutch people can read English posts without a problem, but international readers don’t read Dutch in general.

I have created an Experimental Weblog : Peter’s Experiments in which I will create a combined weblog and try and sort something out with the categories. When users only want to read the English blogs; the select the English category … This may work, but what I then also want is an RSS feed specificly to this category; not usre if TypePad supports this. I hope some of my readers will support me in choosing which way works … so please leave some comments …

Well anyway phase 1 is completed and I am more than satisfied. I still have quite a lot of category linking left to do (some 600 posts), but I will sort that out over the coming evenings / nights. Also ther still is the question of comments (they are not migrated over 🙁 )I need to sort out …

On the Move …

8 juli 2005 2 reacties

There, I have made the decision to move blog services.
I have been playing around with Typepad for 2 days and I think it meets all my needs. I migrated over all my blog posts and have started the tremendous effort of linking the posts to various categories, after all this is what I wanted.

There’s 1 downside …the comments… they are not migrated automaticly and I am not sure whether or not I should take the effot of migrating them manually.
I will leave my blog on Blogger for the time being, so they can still be accessed. Maybe what I’ll do is link them somehow, I’ll see.

This evening I’ve made the changes to my DNS setting for the peterdehaas(.com) domain, so that will be operational tomorrow most likely.

So … this is the last post on Blogger if I can help it …

Just in case : the temporary URL for my English blog is : http://peterdehaas.typepad.com/peter_de_haas_weblog_in_e/

Seriously thinking of moving blog service

8 juli 2005 1 reactie

Over a year ago I started blogging and done a quick scan of availablle tools and services. I ended up with Blogger as the service seemed quite flexible and I could post to my own URL. What I never liked about Blogger is :

  • They don’t support categories
  • The blogdesign is very basic and you have to ‘html’ a lot yourself

This evening I have done some serious testing of Typepad and I have to say I am quite impressed with all of the out of the box features. Typepad is a hosted service like Blogger and instead of offering an FTP service to export to your own URL, Typepad offers more advanced Domain mapping. Althoughypepad is a paid service vs Blogger is for free, I do think it’s worth the money.
What I also like is that there’s an import function (and export guidance) for Blogger, meaning I can move my whole blog over. That does bring me to some questions I have left :

  • Can I also export / Import the comments to my posts ?
  • What are the experiences of other bloggers with moving blogging engine / service ?
  • I use Feedburner for my RSS feed, so I assume I can just point Feedburner to my new feedfile ?
  • WIll Domainmapping sort out OK, so people have no problem finding my Blog ?
  • Is Typepad a good service or am I overlooking other great options ?
  • I still operate 2 blog (one in Dutch and one in English) should I continue this, combine them into one (so Dutch and English posts in one blog) or just skip one ?

Any hints, tips, tricks are more than welcome 🙂
